I want to talk about a common misconception that I believe isn’t discussed enough, and I think it’s a major reason many people fail to make serious progress or get stuck on plateaus.
Nobody else is responsible for your situation except for you.
Now, that might come off as ignorant at first, but think about it. There may be people you could blame for your sadness—an ex who was disloyal, for example—but ultimately no one is responsible for how you choose to move forward except you. You get to choose how you react and how you respond to things that happen to you.
Another false narrative is that taking responsibility must mean you are at fault. This was something that took me a long time to realize. I believe many people hesitate to take responsibility because they think it means admitting they were wrong or that they caused the situation. But that’s not necessarily the case.
We are responsible for dealing with experiences that are not our fault all the time. Bad things happen to people who don’t deserve them—that’s just part of life.
Once we can accept responsibility for where we are, including our problems and our faults, that’s the first step toward solving them. That’s where real self-improvement begins.
DK.
