Thomas Sowell famously said, “There are no solutions in life, only trade-offs.” It’s a simple idea, but one that deserves more attention and more application.

We make thousands of decisions every day. Some are small, others carry real weight. But every decision, no matter how minor, comes with a cost. When you say yes to one path, you’re by default saying no to countless others.

The challenge is that we often want the outcome without accepting the trade-off that comes with it. We seem to have a sense of entitlement in believing we should get what we want without the struggle required to earn it.

Mark Manson touches on this idea in The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Life will always come with problems, that's unavoidable. But in many cases, you get to choose which problems you’re willing to deal with.

Take someone who complains about traffic. It’s frustrating, no doubt. But it’s also the result of choices—where you live, where you work, the lifestyle you’ve built. That doesn’t mean you’re wrong for disliking it, but it is the trade-off you’ve chosen.

So when you’re faced with bigger decisions—not just what color vans to wear, but choices that shape your life, take the time to think through the trade-offs and the outcomes they create. Because avoiding them isn't an option.
